- Vernon, CT, Connecticut - Jean Roberton Howland, 93, of Vernon, CT, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 17, 2022. She was the beloved wife of the late Earl Howland. Born on May 13, 1928, in Saint John, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late David and Rhea (Bissett) Thomson.
She graduated from Saint John High School, New Brunswick Teacher's College, and Gordon College, Boston MA. While a student at Gordon, she met and married the love of her life, Earl. Jean taught school for thirty years, ending her career in Pittsfield, ME, where she and her husband owned and operated the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel.
Jean was involved in Christian work all her life. While a member of First Baptist Church in Pittsfield, ME, she served as Sunday school superintendent and a member of the choir and bell choir. After retirement, she and Earl moved to Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, FL. where Jean volunteered in several village activities. She served as soloist and choir member in the G.S. Community Church where she was a member. Recently Jean moved to West Hartford where she entertained the staff of Brookdale Senior Living with her antics. Jean was much loved and will be missed.
She is survived by her three children and their families, daughter, Elizabeth (Howland) Chadbourne and husband, Mark, of Old Town, ME; two sons, David Howland of Fairfield, ME, and Daniel Howland of Vernon, CT; six cherished grandchildren, Amy (Chadbourne) Leland and husband, Matthew, Rachel (Chadbourne) Solomon and husband, Jeremy, Kristen (Howland) Colburn and husband, Keenan, Matthew Howland and wife, Summer, Lindsay Howland, and Ian Howland; two great-grandchildren, Eowyn Leland and Nathanial Solomon; and sister-in-law, Donna Wilson. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Henderson and husband, Angus; sister-in-law, Lillian Howland; and brother-in-law, Sanford Wilson.
