60	David’s mother had a very famous brother sir Hugh S Robertson use composer and founder and director of the world-famous Glasgow Orpheus choir. US Robertson was born in the city of Glasgow in 1874. His family were owners of a funeral business of high repute. James Robertson and son, and Hugh became the owner of the firm those were the days when funeral undertakers had their own carpentry shops, their own horses and stables, and much else. He left the day-to-day running of the business to a manager, and I voted most of his time and energy to composing and to his beloved choir. 69	Elizabeth (Martin or Newhall) Farrington There is conflicting information on whether Elizabeth, the wife of Edmund Farrington was of the family Martin or Newhall. In an email to me, dated 1/1/1997, Margery Freas writes, An article in The American Genealogist (Jan 1991) states that Edmund (from Olney, not Oney) married Elizabeth New(h)all, a possible sister of Anthony and Thomas New(h)all who came to Lynn, MA from Olney in 1638. The suggestion is made that Elizabeth was perhaps Elizabeth Martin who had married a brother of Anthony and Thomas before marrying Edmund. There was a Robert Martin in Olney bucks who died in 1656. If she was a Martin, that would account for son Edward naming a son "John Martin Farrington." In an email to me dated 1/5/1997, Arthur Farrington writes, I have it like Margery H. Freas, MARTIN. I feel she married the brother of Anthony and Thomas New(h)all before marrying EDMUND and was the daughter of Robert Martin of Olney, Bucks, who died in 1656. Her son, Edward did have a son named John Martin Farrington. In an email to me dated 1/11/1997, Vickie (Elam) White writes, I took a look at the Farrington web page today1. Unfortunately, nothing I saw on this page convinced me of the above statement concerning a first marriage for Elizabeth (NEWHALL) FARRINGTON. A descendancy table is shown with NO CITATIONS. I'm not saying the page needs to have exhaustive footnoting, but it would be nice to have at least a list of the sources used in the document from which the table is taken, especially if what is shown varies markedly from everything else in print about Elizabeth. Certainly the more recent researchers have not found any reason to think that Elizabeth was previously married. Is there a will somewhere for Robert MARTIN? Or a marriage record or a will for some other NEWHALL man who died by 1613 and who was married to a woman named Elizabeth? The Olney and surrounding parish records don't seem to mention any men other than Anthony and Thomas, although there is mention of a "wydow Newell" in Olney in 1604/5 per the TAG 65 article. Elizabeth would have been 19 in 1605, so she certainly could have had an early marriage and widowhood. But we need more proof. He married Abigail Peck in 1758. They had ten children in 24 years. He died on April 21, 1813, in St John, New Brunswick, at the age of 74, and was buried in Saint John, New Brunswick. He was born in either Greenwich or Stamford, Connecticut around 1739. The details of his life are sketchy, and many of the records that would tell us more about him have been destroyed. Darling was named after his grandmother, Mary Darling Whelpley. His great grandfather, Henry Whelpley, came to New England in the early 1600s from England. His father was Jonathan Whelpley, Jr. and his mother was Martha Pennoyer. Darling fought on the British side of the Revolutionary War. He fought at Lloyd’s Neck on Long Island, NY and was defeated by the American Revolutionaries. Darling and the other British soldiers made a raid on Greenwich where he burnt buildings including the church, likely the same church where the family’s records were held. After losing the war, he was sentenced to death by the victorious rebels. Before he could be executed, however, it was decided that he would be exchanged for an American prisoner. . The family did, however, lose all their land and property, which was given over to the American side. How would it have been for his wife, Abigail Peck and their ten children..... the horror and anxiety of having your husband and father sentenced to death, and then the relief of having him returned, but losing all your property and land and being forced to leave to a new country. Darling Whelpley left the United States and sailed for New Brunswick on board the ship called "Hope" in 1783, along with his wife and nine of their children, according to the passenger lists. She had five brothers (four pre-deceased her) and three sisters. In 1929, her parents moved to Edmonton, Alberta where Mary attended Eastwood School. After graduating from high school, Mary worked in the shoe department at Hudson's Bay in downtown Edmonton. Mary accepted the Lord as her Lord and Saviour at a very young age. During her teen years, she spent many evenings assisting at kids' clubs in private homes_chiefly in north Edmonton. It was during this time she met her future mother-in-law, Addie McDonald, and was introduced to her son, Bill. Mary married William (Bill) Smith McDonald on November 30, 1940, and together they raised four sons (Morley (Joan), Bruce (Rosalyn), Kenneth (Shirley), and Stuart (Edina) and one daughter, Mary Ann (David). In 1940, Bill enlisted in the Army and during the next 33 years they were stationed in Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Washington DC, Ottawa, and Winnipeg. In 1973, Bill retired from the army and he and Mary settled in the Nanaimo area. Bill predeceased his wife on February 4th, 1995 after a battle with cancer. While Bill was stationed in Winnipeg, Mary returned to school obtaining a diploma in Social Work which enabled her to work for the Province dealing with needy families. Mary has been faithful to the Lord and sought His will for her throughout her long life. She loved entertaining_a warm welcome, the coffee pot on, and goodies prepared at all times. Her freezers were renowned for their plenteous supply of goodies. Mary is survived by her five children, their spouses, 14 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, brother Stan King, and sisters Ruth (Bill) Russell, Jean Taylor, and Elsie (Sheldon) Harris. When Darling Whelpley was born in 1739 in Greenwich, Connecticut, USA, his father, Jonathan, was 41 and his mother, Martha, was 35. He married Abigail Peck in 1758. They had ten children in 24 years. He died on April 21, 1813, in St John, New Brunswick, at the age of 74, and was buried in Saint John, New Brunswick.

He was born in either Greenwich or Stamford, Connecticut around 1739. The details of his life are sketchy, and many of the records that would tell us more about him have been destroyed. Darling was named after his grandmother, Mary Darling Whelpley. His great grandfather, Henry Whelpley, came to New England in the early 1600s from England. His father was Jonathan Whelpley, Jr. and his mother was Martha Pennoyer.

Darling fought on the British side of the Revolutionary War. He fought at Lloyd’s Neck on Long Island, NY and was defeated by the American Revolutionaries. Darling and the other British soldiers made a raid on Greenwich where he burnt buildings including the church, likely the same church where the family’s records were held.

After losing the war, he was sentenced to death by the victorious rebels. Before he could be executed, however, it was decided that he would be exchanged for an American prisoner. . The family did, however, lose all their land and property, which was given over to the American side. How would it have been for his wife, Abigail Peck and their ten children..... the horror and anxiety of having your husband and father sentenced to death, and then the relief of having him returned, but losing all your property and land and being forced to leave to a new country.

Darling Whelpley left the United States and sailed for New Brunswick on board the ship called "Hope" in 1783, along with his wife and nine of their children, according to the passenger lists. They settled in Upper Saint John and Kingston area with many other British loyalists. Another son, Jonathan, probably came later.

She was a woman of deep religious convictions. Brought up as a Presbyterian, she became a Baptist by conviction, as she was fond of saying. In later years David’s father used to say, “In Scotland, my wife was known as the wife of Hope A. Thomson, but since we came to Canada I have become known as the husband of Mrs. Thomson.” The comment was more proud than rueful: the basis for it was that his wife had become so active in church work in Saint John — Provincial President of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, member of many other organizations, and a leading figure in the life and work of the Germain Street Baptist Church.”

Mary Velma King was born on April 23, 1919 to Stanley and Mabel King (née Suddaby) in Drake, Saskatchewan. She had five brothers (four pre-deceased her) and three sisters. In 1929, her parents moved to Edmonton, Alberta where Mary attended Eastwood School.

After graduating from high school, Mary worked in the shoe department at Hudson's Bay in downtown Edmonton. Mary accepted the Lord as her Lord and Saviour at a very young age. During her teen years, she spent many evenings assisting at kids' clubs in private homes_chiefly in north Edmonton. It was during this time she met her future mother-in-law, Addie McDonald, and was introduced to her son, Bill.

Mary married William (Bill) Smith McDonald on November 30, 1940, and together they raised four sons (Morley (Joan), Bruce (Rosalyn), Kenneth (Shirley), and Stuart (Edina) and one daughter, Mary Ann (David). In 1940, Bill enlisted in the Army and during the next 33 years they were stationed in Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Washington DC, Ottawa, and Winnipeg. In 1973, Bill retired from the army and he and Mary settled in the Nanaimo area. Bill predeceased his wife on February 4th, 1995 after a battle with cancer.

While Bill was stationed in Winnipeg, Mary returned to school obtaining a diploma in Social Work which enabled her to work for the Province dealing with needy families.

Mary has been faithful to the Lord and sought His will for her throughout her long life. She loved entertaining_a warm welcome, the coffee pot on, and goodies prepared at all times. Her freezers were renowned for their plenteous supply of goodies.

Mary is survived by her five children, their spouses, 14 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, brother Stan King, and sisters Ruth (Bill) Russell, Jean Taylor, and Elsie (Sheldon) Harris.
